Spotlight Sorors
The members of St. Croix Alumnae Chapter proudly celebrate Soror Sandra Setorie. Soror Sandra L. Setorie is a third-generation U. S. Virgin Islander with deep roots in the British Virgin Islands. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Business and Management, and a Master of Public Administration from the University of the Virgin Islands. Soror Setorie often comments that youngsters raised in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean are educated early in politics, and that Politics 101 and 102 are taught in the homes. Growing up amid politics and public service, Soror Setorie felt compelled to give back to an island community that afforded her vast opportunities to succeed. Consequently, she became active in community organizations, particularly those that served to develop and empower children and young adults. Soror Setorie is a strong advocate for quality education and investing in and enabling young people to succeed. While Soror Setorie worked previously in the private sector, she avows that her 30 years tenure in the public sector as well as non-governmental and non-profit organizations made a greater impact in the lives of residents in her community.
Soror Setorie currently serves as the Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Public Service Commission (VIPSC). Over the past 25 years she has engaged in public utilities governance at several levels within the industry. In her leadership capacity, she has led the administration and operations management, personnel, and budgetary matters of the St. Croix unit. She conducted research and investigated public utility and regulatory issues. She managed independent hearing examinations, composed recommendations, and issued reports to the Commission. She was a driving influence in drafting, recommending, developing, and implementing utility regulations and policies. From an early age Soror Setorie engaged in organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America and student government associations committed to elevating esteem, developing confidence, and cultivating character of its members, while concurrently giving back to and providing a service to our communities’ less fortunate population. It was no accident then that the early leadership and activism skills learned propelled her to continue a legacy of public service with a voice for those traditionally not heard.
As a young adult, she became a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader, served on the local Parent Teacher Associations and PTSA organizations, held offices in the Business and Professional Women Organization of St. Croix. Soror Setorie has extensive leadership experience in business, government relations, politics, training and advocacy. An ardent activist and change-agent for non-violence, Soror Setorie was trained and became a victim’s advocate; she later served on the advocate training committee, and held offices on the Board of Directors of the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix. Her initial exposure to governance and advocacy also led Soror Setorie to advocate politically through Political Leadership Development training, working directly with political organizations, public office campaign management, emerging political candidates and elected officials. She served in varied political positions including President of the New Horizon Women’s Democratic Club of St. Croix, Chairwoman of the St. Croix District Committee of the Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands, and serves as Secretary of the Territorial Committee of the Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands. Soror Setorie has been elected to both the District Committee and Territorial Committee At Large of the Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands. As an elected party official, Soror Setorie’s mantra is that the greatest of honors that one can possibly attain is to offer selfless services to others and expecting nothing in return.
Soror Setorie was initiated at the St. Croix Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in April 2010. She has held several positions including Chapter President, Vice- President, Recording Secretary, and Chair of the Social Action Committee. She currently serves as chair of the Nominating Committee. Soror Setorie is the proud mother of three adult children and grandmother of one. Soror Setorie, we salute and congratulate you on your accomplishments throughout the years.
